The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. (New Road Construction in Galway)

The Good
Today Wednesday October 1st, 2008 the construction work began on the "New Bus Lane for the Dublin Road". This is a positive development for cyclists - especially for students attending GMIT.
Construction work is to last for approximately 16 weeks
The outbound bus lane will be developed from the Ffrench Roundabout (Moneenageisha Cross) to Duggan’s Shop at the Renmore Road junction. Also to cater for cyclists this work will also involve the widening of the outbound traffic lane from Duggan’s Shop at the Renmore Road junction to Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) at the Skerritt Roundabout. Since the Inbound Bus Lane was built this created the problem of the outbound lane been to narrow.
This is the only scheme I know of in Galway City that has been undertaken just to cater for cyclists and it must be welcomed. It has to be said this should have been done when the Inbound Bus Lane was constructed a few years ago. But it is a start.

The Bad
Work commenced last Monday September 29th on the Doughiska Road Scheme.
Construction work is to last for approximately 16 weeks

GCC issued a press release about our concerns for this scheme.
Cyclists call on Transport Minister to back up cycling focus by blocking hostile road plans

We also lobbied local politicians to have the scheme rectified and brought to the attention of the City Officials the dangers with such a scheme for cyclists.
However none of our concerns were taken on board by the City Council.

The Ugly
Two Road scheme's being built at the same time by the same City council - one is very good for cyclists and the other is very bad for cyclists! Go figure.
I guess it depends on what Consulting Engineers are awarded the contracts because the City Council have no consistency when it comes to such schemes.
